  2. ELECTRONIC  CLIPPER  USER'S  GUIDE

  5. BASIC REQUIREMENTS
  6. -------------------
  7. Electronic Clipper images require application(s) that are compatible with TIFF and/or EPS file formats. The TIFF images are saved as TIFF files in Adobe Photoshop. EPS images are saved as Adobe Illustrator 1.1 files. Any other hardware requirements will be based primarily on the applications you use and the type of final output you plan to produce. For best results, your printer should be PostScript compatible.

  9. All documentation assumes you have a basic understanding of how to use your computer and the programs you have purchased for it.

  11. IMPORTANT
  12. ----------
  13. The files for the PC users are in an invisible folder on the CD named PC_USERS. Mac users may be able to see this folder in certain applications when opening or placing a file.  DO NOT use the files in this folder on your Mac.  These files are saved in a PC format. If the PC files are used on a Mac, results can be unpredictable.

  15. ART SELECTION
  16. --------------
  17. ** Printed Pictorial Index **
  18. This provides a thumbnail and file name for each image in the issue.
  19.   
  20. ** Aldus Fetch **
  21. The Aldus Fetch 1.2 Browser folder contains:
  22. Ñ The Aldus Fetch 1.2 Browser application
  23. Ñ An Aldus Fetch Browser catalog of the current month's images
  24. Ñ A cumulative Aldus Fetch Browser catalog of the current year's images
  25. Ñ An export file for use with Aldus Fetch 
  26. Each of these is explained below. YOU DO NOT NEED FETCH, OR ANY OF THE ITEMS IN THE ALDUS FETCH 1.2 BROWSER FOLDER, TO USE THE ARTWORK. THE FETCH BROWSER CATALOG IS SIMPLY ANOTHER WAY OF LOCATING AN IMAGE.

  28. Aldus Fetch 1.2 Browser application: This application allows you to "browse" a catalog of images. You can view thumbnail versions of the images in the catalog, search for images by keywords, preview images, and copy them to your hard drive.

  30. Current month Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the images in the current month's Electronic Clipper package.
  31.  
  32. Current year Browser catalog: This catalog contains all the images from January of the current year through the present.
  33.  
  34. Aldus Fetch export file: If you own Aldus Fetch (a database application that lets you catalog images, movies, and sounds), this export file can be used to create Fetch catalogs. Like the Browser, Fetch allows you to view thumbnail versions of the images, search for images by keywords, preview images, and copy them to your hard drive; in addition, Fetch also allows you to add your own images, movies and sounds to your catalog.

  36. ** Multi-Ad Search **
  37. Because keywords and descriptions are attached to the image files, they can be used with Search. When you Add Files to your catalog, Search will pick up the keywords and descriptions from the image files.

  39. USING THE CLIP ART
  40. ------------------
  41. ** PAGE LAYOUT PROGRAMS **
  42. Open your page layout program, create a new document and place the TIFF and EPS files as you would any other images. The following page layout programs are compatible with both TIFF & EPS file formats:
  43.         ÑAldus PageMaker
  44.         ÑQuarkXpress
  45.         ÑReady, Set, Go!
  46.         ÑVentura Publisher

  48. ** DRAW PROGRAMS **
  49. Open your draw program and OPEN the EPS file. These images can be manipulated like any other EPS image. The following draw programs are compatible with the EPS file format:
  50.         ÑAdobe Illustrator
  51.         ÑAldus FreeHand (TIFF files can be PLACED in a document)
  52.         ÑCanvas
  53. Many of your Electronic Clipper EPS images are provided as layered illustrations. This means that several elements can be lifted out of a single image and used as stand-alone artwork. In order to pull apart or separate the layers of an EPS file, a PostScript draw program like Adobe Illustrator or Aldus FreeHand is necessary.

  55. ** PAINT PROGRAMS **
  56. The TIFF files are either 300 dpi black and white images or 170 dpi grayscale and color images. They can be manipulated like any other TIFF image in the following programs:
  57.         ÑAdobe Photoshop (EPS images are converted to bitmap images)
  58.         ÑCanvas
  59.         ÑColor Studio
  60.         ÑDigital Darkroom
  61.         ÑImage Studio
  62.         ÑPixelPaint Professional (EPS images are converted to bitmap images)

  65. If your application was not listed above, please refer to your manual for compatiblity.
